You will learn various tying, dying and shibori techniques, as well as basic color theory and design concepts for dying. It will be fun, and colorful and bright! Apparently, my reputation as a serious cat lady precedes me. One of the funniest things that kept happening at last week’s book tour events was people coming up to me to show me pictures of their cats. One very kind crafter in Boston even made me a stuffed animal that looked just like Turk. I’m officially that* girl. It’s alright though — the stray cat hairs on my coat gave me away ages ago. So it’s no surprise that I’m kind of loving these handmade cat lockets by Lee May Foster at The Shop Floor Project. Kooky? Yep. Cute? Totally. You can pick up several different styles right here. Troika sent us documentation of Shoal, their newest public artwork for the Corus building in Queens Quay East on Toronto's Waterfront. 467 independent, iridescent objects that resemble fishing lures "liquify" the ceiling of a 50m long corridor, mimicking the interdependency patterns seen in schooling fish. According to Troika, this is meant to change "the spatial experience of the corridor while opening up the surrounding architecture infinitely towards Lake Ontario."

A couple of weeks ago, the American Museum of Natural History released Explorer, an iPhone app and museum guide that has gotten rave reviews. The application makes use of several state of the art technologies, one of which is an indoor Wi-Fi network which allows the Explorer app to pinpoint a user’s exact location in the museum and direct them to specific exhibits and even the closest bathroom. It is a prime example of effective brand utility, augmenting a museumgoer’s experience while placing the organization’s logo on the mobile user’s home screen.

What is probably just as impressive as the museum’s app is its effort to promote it. AMNH is pushing the application using traditional PR and advertising. Once in the museum, posters educate those waiting in line about the app and how to rent an iPod touch. The ticket stub announces another of its apps: “Dinosaur iPhone app free download at AMNH.ORG/APPs.” Of course, Explorer is the first app users see when visiting this URL. Certain exhibits have stickers with iPhones on them as a call-to-action. Ads are visible across the entire museum, it is clear the message AMNH wants to get across.

What’s important to realize here, is the power of mobile when properly integrated. As the above image depicts, brand utility plus advertising will yield the best results. Without backing up a mobile application or on-device campaign with advertising, PR, or existing properties, efforts could easily fall flat. We’ve talked to agencies where a client’s refusal to promote an app has resulted in just that.

Another thing to keep in mind is that not all information is meant to be provided through mobile phones just because it can be. Sometimes a “traditional” placard or sticker on an object makes a lot more sense than building an augmented reality application to display the same text. The experience for the user should be as frictionless as possible, and we must consider every medium’s strengths and weaknesses. In the case of Explorer, the mobile phone did what nothing else really can — locate and track a physical individual in order to provide contextual content. Through a combination of the innovative and the obvious, AMNH made a trip to the museum a lot more fun and worthwhile.

Many of us have grown up thinking that if we are properly self-punishing then we are somehow being responsible. "What, I'm a nervous wreck — how could I possibly take on more?" On the other hand, if, God forbid, we are feeling carefree, we have this nagging sense that we're being downright irresponsible, certain that if we don't get right back to self-flagellation then the other shoe is going to drop. And hard. We don't correlate our sense of responsibility with what we are actually producing. We correlate it with how hard we are being on ourselves.

Thus anything that's fun cannot possibly be work, and everything that's unpleasant is.

I can hunch over my computer screen for half the day churning frenetically through e-mails without getting much of substance done, all the while telling myself what a loser I am, and leave at 6:00 p.m. feeling like I put in a full day. And given my level of mental fatigue, I did! I can spend my Saturday afternoon worrying about financial ruin to the point of exhaustion, and my inner critic is satisfied. But clear my mind with a 30-minute meditation, go for a 45-minute morning walk, or leave the office for an hour to decompress and get a healthy lunch — all of which would make me more productive for the day — and the voices inside my head start screaming, "Infidel!"

(Those of you who don't suffer from this tendency toward self-criticism, please comment and let the rest of us know your secret.)

We can trace a lot of our modern dysfunction to our Puritan roots. Historian Perry Miller wrote that "without some understanding of Puritanism...there is no understanding of America."

Historian Stephen Innes noted, "In no other colony could the most industrious women and men, who throughout their lifetimes had striven to 'improve [their] Time and Talents for God's glory,' daily lacerate themselves with accusations of 'selfishness...' and the overwhelming conviction that they were...the most 'unproffitable' of the Lord's servants."

Historian Amanda Porterfield observed that "American missionary thought involved a strong investment in self-criticism that was rooted in the biblical concern about the need for awareness of sin and, more specifically, in the Puritan preoccupation with self-assessment."

Sound familiar?

The Puritans had a strong work ethic. They also burned witches at the stake and massacred Native American women and children. We need new role models.

Unfortunately, the high-pressure business school atmosphere isn't the best place to look. The fantasies are just different; hyperanxiety about failing grades gets conflated with being responsible and getting an education. The pressure the VC culture puts on start-ups does more to induce stress than creativity. And don't get me started on the nonprofit sector. It's the sacristy for self-criticism.

Worry isn't work. Being stressed out isn't work. Anxiety isn't work. Entertaining a sense of impending doom isn't work. Incessant internal verbal punishment isn't work. Indulging the great unknown fear in your own mind isn't work. Hating yourself isn't work.

Work is the manifestation of value, and anyone who tells you that a person whose mind is 50% occupied with anxiety is more likely to manifest value is a person who isn't manifesting much.

It's OK to take care of yourself. To take time to exercise. By all accounts, exercise improves brain function. It's OK to eat well, and to slow down enough to eat consciously and appreciate the food. Proper nutrition improves brain function as well. Go on vacation. Meditate. Take a break each week for an hour to see a therapist, or a movie, or stop in a church, if that's your practice. Sit quietly on your porch in the evening and reflect. Chaining yourself to your desk is no more correlated to productivity than mental self-annihilation.

After all, who is likely to be the more productive contributor to the company, and to the world — the person who is healthy, rested, well-balanced, full of energy, and clear of mind, or the sleep-deprived, overweight, heart-attack-waiting-to-happen, psychologically unexamined, self-critical maniac? Who is more likely to be present enough to see the next breakthrough? Who is more likely to analyze problems clearly, for what they really are, instead of what they are assumed to be?

We have to rethink what it means to work and to be productive. We have to disentangle self-hatred from responsibility, self-criticism from self-care.

What does re-thinking mean in this case? Start thinking of being hard on yourself as being irresponsible. Start thinking of wasting half of your brain power on fantasies about your own destruction as self-indulgent. Conflate self-negativity with laziness. Start thinking of time for yourself as being responsible. Start thinking of a healthy mid-day meal as essential to your productivity, time away from your desk as productive.

In short, start thinking the opposite of what we've been taught since, well, since the Puritans. We stopped burning witches at the stake four hundred years ago. It's time we stopped doing it to ourselves.

Let's Augment Our Reality

For those of you in the know about augmented reality, skip right on down to the videos. For everyone else, let me give you some context. Augmented reality is a technique that combines information from the real world and enhances it with computer-generated data in real time. The computer (or mobile phone)'s camera registers a specially printed code called a glyph and overlays basically anything you can imagine.

While AR is not a new technology, a rash of cool projects have come out that show off what it can do. (Check out the list of projects below the post.) Using AR for marketing or advertising is going to be an interesting trend to watch. Right now, people are enjoying the whiz bang cool factor but in many cases the AR does not really augment an experience, it just augments an image.

I've been tracking the twitter conversation between two friends (@pheezy & @dneumann) at Organic's Emerging Platforms team who have been passing all these cool projects back and forth. They argue that utility is the key factor and I wholeheartedly agree. Utility plus entertainment would be even better. The Topps baseball cards and the Eye of Judgement PS3 game examples do this best.

Final Thought: As the graphics and concepts improve, I expect to see some pretty amazing things. Can we move beyond whiz bang?

Porsche Design Incorporates Car Design into Shoes

What happens when you bring two great brands like Porsche and Adidas together? You get excellence and innovation all wrapped up in a shoe, the Bounce:S. The shoe employs springs and mechanics to propel you further, faster and higher. Time Magazine called it one of 2008's top 50 inventions and it has walked away with a Red Dot Design Award as well as the Plus X Award 2008.

This is a great example of a successful brand collaboration since the final product highlights shoe design, improved by car design. Porsche has always had one foot in the fashion world (I love the classic P'8433 sunglasses). I wonder if Adidas can help design their next car...

Final Thought: How many Porsche die-hards will become Adidas fans and vice versa?

Where did the idea for memelibs come about?

MIKE: I was watching TV, as I often do, and just started yelling at the new Microsoft I’m a PC commercials. After a few jokes like “I’m a PC and I have adult acne.” and “I’m a PC and just vomited a little in my mouth.” I realized you could add just about anything and it would be funny. I jumped online that night and IM'd Robb.

ROBB: So Mike messages me and says very little more than "hey, andimapc.com is not taken.".

"Huh."

"Yeah."

It kind of snowballed from there. The Microsoft campaign had just started and I think we both knew that the response to it would be… polarized. Mike shared his first "andimapc-isms" and after spitting Diet Coke over my keyboard I knew he was on to something.

How did you "publicize" any new memes?

MIKE: Word of mouth, IM, message boards, and word of Twitter. We purposely avoided using twitter at a “marketing tool.” Just a few posts from each of us was enough to get the word out there. When people overpromote their projects I usually un-follow them, so we were sensitive to that.

ROBB: We don't really use Twitter as promotion in any way; it's more of a soundboard. We twitter our projects because we're psyched about them.

MIKE: On isgraphicdesignart.com we added a link that automatically twitters a link back to the site, and I wish we had launched the other sites with that, as it really helped getting that site out there.

What has the reaction been overall?

ROBB: "Man, you must be making loads with the ads." Okay, not really. But it was part of the response, which is funny considering running ads for a few days didn't make us enough to order two pizzas for delivery. I think, when the submissions started snowballing in, people started noticing how funny some of the submissions were. Oh, and we dropped the ads after a few days.

MIKE: A lot of “What is this?” and a lot of “How many domains do you own?”

Which meme has been the most popular? Any numbers you want to share?

And I'm a PC. We received about 2 million unique visitors according to Google Analytics, and about 20,000 submissions.

Any surprises?

MIKE: Getting as much traffic as we did was a nice surprise as was not getting an overage bill. The dialog around Is graphic design art? was a surprising. Especially all the links on German graphic design blogs.

Anything else I should know?

ROBB: There's more on the way. In fact, the Duo will launch at least 3 sites this year. Let's hope that the meme is not a harsh mistress all the time.

ROBB IRGANG
Having worked on the web since a time where "social" was an offline affair, Robb Irrgang is now the web lead for Wright in Chicago and a continuing contributor to Rick Valicenti's collaborative design studio, Thirst. Since the beginning of his relationship with Thirst in 2003, he has worked with clients such as Motorola, Gilbert Paper and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. His work with Rick has been recognized in Eye, Print, Step into Design and has been exhibited in TDC New York and TDC Tokyo shows.

Robb has been active in various online communities since 1995. He was one of the managing members of the critically acclaimed design community Swanky. Robb combines programmer logic, a business school background and engineering title with a taste for the creative.

MIKE ESSL
Mike Essl is a partner in the award-winning design firm ME/AT which he cofounded in 2007 with Alexander Tochilovsky, a fellow graduate of the Cooper Union and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Essl's clients include Chronicle Books, DC Comics, Intel, Microsoft, MTV, National Geographic, Nickelodeon, Columbia University, Rizzoli, the band They Might Be Giants, and the rapper Warren G. Most recently Essl co-designed Watching the Watchmen with Chip Kidd, launched isgraphicdesignart.com, and is featured in the A&E biography of Mr. T.

Essl has taught at Parsons School of Design, School of the Visual Arts, and is now an assistant professor at the Cooper Union. Essl's work has been recognized in numerous publications and by the AIGA and the Art Directors Club. In 2003 his work with the Chopping Block was featured in the National Design Triennial. From 2006-2008 Essl was the Vice President of AIGA's New York Chapter.

Tropicana's Conundrum

Browsing all the news about the Tropicana redesign and subsequent reestablishment of the old design, I wondered what did the online RFP look like? Did anyone even think of digital until Arnell's designs were set in stone? What would their goals be? Luckily, New Media Strategies (NMS) gave me a peek into a social media strategy for Tropicana.

"Engage bloggers and online communities by increasing brand awareness of Tropicana through its Election-week AnOrangeAmerica campaign"

Hmm...ok, ride the coat-tails of the election to increase brand awareness. What does orange juice have to do with politics? And why is a beverage giving me a data visualization of the Twitterverse? I appreciate it, but I'd probably turn to CNN or Twitter itself for more accurate election info. As for the data viz, it looks pretty enough but needs to be closely examined to actually pull any information out of it. I’m not sure what exactly I’m looking at.

So did they accomplish their strategy? NMS says that online placements and messages totaled over 4.6 million impressions. AnOrangeAmerica received thousands (1,000? or 10,000?) of visitors to the site with approximately 15% clicking through to watch a Tropicana commercial. That’s raising brand awareness with a pretty small group of twittering, politics-hungry folks who dig data visualization.

Also, upon closer investigation the "buzz" NMS says they created and documented with Delicious is actually a bunch of their own people talking about their own project. I appreciate the effort to try something new by both NMS and JESS3, but it just doesn't seem very "on brand" to me. I can picture someone in a meeting saying "wouldn't it be cool to use Twitter and data viz and the election for this project" but it doesn’t seem a logical extension of an orange juice brand.

Yes, passionate Tropicana fans exist. Facebook alone has 10 unofficial Tropicana groups. Perhaps Tropicana would have been better served talking to those folks? Maybe even getting some feedback on the new branding? They might’ve saved themselves the trouble of re- and subsequently un-rebranding.

And for the record, while Peter Arnell's description of the branding made me LOL, I do like the little orange screw top. Nice touch.

Something to think about:
Maybe the problem is the fact that we call it "digital strategy" instead of just "strategy." It tends to make people think about the digital opportunities in terms of specific executions rather than thinking holistically about reaching out to real people in ways that make sense in both the real and digital world.

Droog, the Dutch design collective that paved the way for inspiring design in the early 1990s is opening a store on Greene Street in SoHo in two weeks. This will be the third Droog store, following their flagship in Amsterdam and a second store in Tokyo. The interior of the SoHo store will be a design spectacle in itself — it was conceived by Rotterdam-based designer Jurgen Bey and in an article in The New York Times, it is described as an "exploded house made from bricks of blue foam"...

"A prosthetic is a prosthetic, and your body has to be comfortable with it and you have to mentally make it part of yourself," says Nadya Vessey, who now has the prosthetic of her dreams.

Vessey, who lost both of her legs from the knee down as a child, dreamed up her ideal prosthetic —a mermaid tail—after a young boy asked her what had happened to her legs. "I'm a little mermaid," Vessey replied. The idea stayed with her, and prompted her to write a letter to the world-famous Weta Workshop, the Wellington, New Zealand based special effects company responsible for the Lord of the Rings films. Vessey didn't expect a response, and was shocked when Weta agreed to make her the tail.

"She was very patient. We haven't always been able to fulfil some requests. We were engaged in it pretty quickly because it was a challenge," says Richard Taylor of Weta. According to the Dominion Post, "The suit was made mostly of wetsuit fabric and plastic moulds, and was covered in a digitally printed sock. Mermaid-like scales were painted by hand." The realism of the tail was apparently very important to Vessey, who, as Taylor notes, "actually physically wanted to look like a mermaid."

Upon completion of the tail, Nadya was able to take it for a test swim, which can be seen here:

"It was absolutely amazing," said Weta costumer Lee Williams of the swim, "It's beautiful to watch Nadya swim and to see that dream come true and to be a part of that. I feel quite blessed."

Be Careful with Buzzwords

I've been working on a Keynote deck for the past week or so about reaching people in a post-advertising world. We all acknowledge that we are in this world, but it seems like we're less willing to define what that means. One of the things that I see holding us back is the fact that so many people are relying on buzzwords and adverspeak to come up with new ideas. "Make that viral." Uh-huh...yeah, coming right up. "We need to create a community." Um, why?!?

In a very informal poll, I asked my Twitter friends which buzzwords they feel are overused. The results were not that shocking but definitely informative. Viral topped the list, followed closely by widget, community and authenticity. I was surprised that people didn't seem to have much of an issue with location-based or cross-platform. But hey, today's vocabulary is tomorrow's adverspeak.

As I set about trying to find examples to dissect the meaning of these buzzwords, I realized the biggest reason they've lost their meaning is that people think of them as tactics. Buzzwords are rarely strategic. They achieve a very specific goal but don't necessarily move a large idea forward.

Here's a better process:

Look closely at the business needs and the opportunities
Come up with a strategy that meets those needs and takes advantage of those opportunities
Determine a tactic that fulfills the strategy
Identify the best way to execute the tactic

Something to Think About:
I'll come back to the individual buzzwords in subsequent posts. But for now, can we agree to use them only after determining a smart strategy?

The Expectations of a Monetized Twitter Feed

Let me say right away, I commend the Brooklyn Museum for their foray into social media and An Xiao for using Twitter as her artistic medium.

My last post talked about the Museum monetizing Twitter with their members-only program, 1stFans. I'm also curious to look at the expectations inherent in paying for access to a protected Twitter feed. Since I signed up as a 1stfans member, I was granted access to the @1stfans Twitter feed and private Flickr and Facebook groups. But what exactly did that mean? What was I going to get for my membership? The answer was not entirely clear.

The first few tweets from @1stfans reminded me of a Swoon event and gave a general welcome to the community. Then they announced that they would have a guest twitterer (like a guest blogger I guess) for the month of January. The artist An Xiao submitted a proposal to the Museum about a conceptual art piece comparing Morse code, one of the first instant messaging technologies, to Twitter.

A guest twitterer? That seems odd to me. In researching for this post, I read the "About" on the1stfans info page, which said they'll connect online "with access to artist-created content on our 1stfans Twitter Art Feed." Aha! A Twitter art feed, not an informational twitter feed. Two very different things. But what the heck is a Twitter art feed? Apparently, I'm not the only one asking this question.

Conceptually I understand the comparison between Twitter and Morse code but keeping up with the 1stfans tweets was cumbersome for me. I had to cut and paste the instant communication of Morse code into a translator to discover what Xiao wanted to say. In no way, shape or form was the communication instant, which seemed strange. Also, the tweets didn't strike me as particularly thought provoking. Things like:

WOW SWOON PRINT GREAT TO MEET EVERYONE =AX

COFFEE POT EMPTY. PLEASE ADVISE.

In some ways, it felt like an alternate reality game (ARG). Except without an AR or a G. But it wasn't an ARG, it was art. Here's an artist's statement and a video.

So for a while, I just ignored the tweets and moved 1stfans from my "must read" group in TweetDeck to my "meh...when I get to it" group. That seemed like a missed opportunity on the part of the Museum. There I was, an excited member, ignoring this year-long program within the first week. I reached out to the artist and the Museum, who repeated Xiao's statement and said:

"not every visitor to the museum enjoys every show we do here or every painting on the wall...that is perhaps true for the @1stfans feed as well."

True enough. But this is the perfect opportunity to do what social media does so well, start a conversation. What is Twitter art? What is art? Perhaps @1stfans isn't the place to have it, maybe we could move to Facebook or even the @BrooklynMuseum Twitter feed. But the conversation should be started.

So what does it all mean? Frankly, I'm not sure. It definitely means that the social media waters are murky (even in the museum world), but they're worth playing around with. The Brooklyn Museum has gotten a lot of press. And they've been doing a great job to visitor concerns. While transparency is important, there are some social norms that develop with each of these technologies as well. Does the fact that the feed is monetized change anything? For me, I expected the 1stfans Twitter feed to give me information about art and about the Museum's activities. Perhaps it's my fault for jumping to conclusions.

Something to Think About: More than ever, it's not about the message, it's about the conversation. There are still lots of confusing conversations going on via Twitter, where people are YELLING, disclosing TMI or even talking in Morse code. How do you want to start a conversation?

The Brooklyn Museum Monetizes a Twitter Feed

The Brooklyn Museum has launched a new members only program called 1stfans. For $20 a year, this "socially networked museum membership" connects 1stfans members using Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. I received a membership for a Christmas gift and was very excited to see that the first event was with the street artist Swoon.

The $20 price tag for permission to view a protected Twitter feed and to be a member of private Flickr and Facebook groups is absolutely brilliant! Who else is making money in this manner with Twitter? There are discussions about how Twitter should monetize or how to advertise via Twitter, but not much about how companies can actually monetize their presence on Twitter. (If you know of any good monetization examples, please let me know.)

Maybe museums and cultural institutions are just different than brands and corporations. People understand the museum membership model, therefore a social media membership to the Brooklyn Museum kind of makes sense. People are already used to paying a museum for exclusive content, members-only lines at the museum and a tax deduction. This model does not transfer over to the typical big brand, which spends millions of dollars a year trying to get people to listen. However, there is no doubt that a thoughtful presence (membership or not) on Twitter has helped brands like Zappos and Dell.

But with so many brands clamoring to seize the opportunities provided by Twitter, what expectations do people have of companies or institutions? What sort of return will I get via the social media itself? That's what I'm most interested to find out. I've got another blog entry in the works about the first few weeks of my 1stfans membership -- what's been working and what hasn't.

Something to Think About: Museums might be able to convince people to pay for a protected Twitter fee, but those folks are going to expect a Twitter feed worthy of that fee.

Saw this on theApt Broadcast today, "this house is basically an airplane hangar that encompasses an old-fashioned wood home, exactly as it would if this were a sitcom set.". Built in 2001, Adam Kalkin's Bunny Lane House has been well documented in contemporary architecture books, but this is the first time it's gotten the full Stefan Boublil treatment. "His home, built 2001 on the former Pfizer estate is basically an ode to the sound-stages of old, a place in which dreams are allowed to come true. As you can see in the pics i was able to shoot in between dropping the camera on the floor, there is not much here that can be derided. Think Before You Twitter?

With the social media scene looking somewhat like the Wild West, a few smart companies are thinking about how to control (as best they can) outgoing communication done by employees. There are lots of companies with social media strategies, that's not news. But the idea that companies are thinking about how employees will portray their employer is pretty fascinating.

Intel, IBM and the Navy (the Navy?) all have published guidelines on how to best make use of this new technology without making them look dumb. And of course the guidelines remind people not to spend 8+ hours a day on Facebook.

Who will come up with guidelines next and who will take things too far? From what I can see from the examples above, they have created thoughtful guidelines and are doing things right. Common sense can go a long way as well. We're talking about managing people, not technology.

Remember lenticular printing, where two different images were printed on a single piece of striated plastic? You could tilt the plastic to one side for a sort of ghetto animation effect.

Mercedes Benz will be incorporating a more high-tech version of that, called Splitview, in their car dashboards:

The eight-inch Splitview Command display uses a clever masking system to direct light from alternate pixels in different directions, resulting in a two-at-once viewer where the other screen is completely invisible to one viewer.

The idea is that the driver can look at maps while the passenger watches something else. For just driving around it sounds like overkill to us, but we wish this tech had existed when we were children; with only one TV, What To Watch was the ultimate and epic sibling battleground.

Good Mobile Ideas (thx PSFK)

I attended the Good Ideas in 2009: Mobile event this morning. As always, PSFK puts on a good show. The plan is to have a series of salons raising interesting topics such as mobile technology, collaboration, social media and the future.

Allison Mooney moderated a panel with Steve Roberts (ShopText), Alistair Fulton (Deloitte), Kevin Slavin (area/code) and Florian Peters (CScout). Much of the discussion rehashed the obvious trends, location-based services and what the carriers should do (but aren't). Since there were lots of agency folks there, I expected more examples of what brands are doing it right or trying new things. Or at least a word or two about the sweet announcement that the G1 phone can handle Flash (not Flashlite). C'mon iPhone...we're waiting.

A pearl of wisdom from Kevin Slavin: we all need to remember that a mobile device with its tiny screen and hard to use keyboards are not like a little Internet. If behind the scenes processes (like location) can help provide some context, then the overall experience will be better because it doesn't rely on people having to enter that information. Kevin gave a funny example of searching for Here Theater in the Village. Because his phone knew where he was (the Village), it could give him meaningful results for his "here" search.

Also, Naveen Selvadurai (at Socialight) and Dennis Crowley (founded Dodgeball) hinted at an upcoming project (I've gotten a sneak peek) that will combine the fun of games/leaderboards (a la Jane McGonigal) with location-based technology. I'll be sure to blog with more as they roll the project out.

Something to Think About: It's easy to get excited about technology for technology sake, especially with mobile technology. But the goal should be about creating experiences and having the technology enable the experience.

Listening to the BBC on my morning commute the other day, I heard an interesting piece about Google's efforts to track flu outbreaks through the frequency of specific flu-related searches (flu symptoms, achy muscles, sore throat, etc). Google claims that through this system, they can predict flu outbreaks by more than 7-10 days than traditional methods done by the CDC.

Something to Think About: Are people comfortable with Google's efforts to publicize our searches? Even if it for the greater good?

Using the phone's camera function (but without taking a photo), you can scan a barcode of an item and comparison shop right there in the app (ShopSavvy and CompareEverywhere are two apps reviewed here). No need to go to a bunch of sites and remember who has the best deal. You can store the deals you find into wish lists to act on later.

While there are iPhone apps that allow for the same scanning (like Snappr), the reviews have been spotty, citing imaging problems or a reliance on QR codes rather than the ever-present barcode. The whole process is super quick on the G1.

Something to Think About: While the G1 (or other Android devices) are not likely to oust the iPhone as the "it" mobile device, it is creating some healthy competition in the mobile app market.

Actually, it's not even that involved. At the ultimate site for weather simplicity, check out Umbrella Today? to know what to bring with you as you leave the house. You can set it up to text you on days that you'll need an umbrella too.

I'm finding more and more that people are creating apps or services because they can but not necessarily because they solve any sort of problem. I love this example because it takes something we think about - weather - and breaks it down one step further - how will the weather affect me once I leave the house.

May I never be caught in a downpour again.

I love the idea of new ideas. New, fresh ideas that no one has thought about before.

The only problem is that sometimes the new, fresh ideas haven't been thought about before because they are simply unworkable (but great ideas).

Ben (from Noisy Decent Graphics) explains why their firm does NOT use an ice cream truck for presentations of their work. I'll admit my fascination with ice cream trucks that extends beyond just ice cream and the Smashing Pumpkins' Today video.

here's a great interview with weatherhead experience design group, the folks who made many of the original interactives in EMP (experience music project).

i really like their emphasis on participatory learning and multiple intelligences. it almost makes me miss museum work. but for right now, i'm still excited about online experiences.

Demor Creates a Multisensory Game

I feel that many ideas for interactives for people who are deaf or blind don't think about ways to open up the level of interactivity to a larger group, rather than zeroing in on how to make a game exclusively for a deaf audience or blind audience.

The Demor project has launched a game that would be fun for a sighted person or a blind person (although might be very difficult for someone who is hard of hearing). The game allows players to use their hearing to locate the enemy and navigate through 3D space. Review here.
